What's the big deal?

I filled a difficult position recently and celebrated for a few seconds once the paperwork was filed before turning my attention to other tasks. I then celebrated for another few seconds a couple of days later when the supervisor confirmed the guy showed up on time for his first day.

Good thing it was only a few seconds, though. Otherwise I may have been annoyed when I opened my email the next day to read he was a no-show on Day Two. Not surprisingly, the supervisor asked me to end the assignment and find a backfill in that same email.

I call the guy two-and-a-half hours after his shift should've started. After several seconds of overly-obvious "I'm just waking up" sounds coming from the other end of the line, the guy finally speaks.

Guy: Hello?

Me: (polite introduction, and then--) Your supervisor notified us you didn't show up today, and you didn't notify anyone that you weren't going to be there.

Guy: Yeah, well, as you can probably hear, I just woke up. I overslept.

Me: Unfortunate. The supervisor asked your assignment be terminated.

Guy: What? Seriously?

Me: Yes. You were a no-call, no-show on your second day of work. As such, the supervisor requested your assignment be ended, so you will not be going back.

Guy: What's the big deal? I'll just call in now and go in tomorrow.

Me: Well, seeing as today is Friday and the facility isn't scheduled to run tomorrow, you won't be going in tomorrow. Or ever, seeing as the supervisor ended your assignment. And the big deal is that they expect you to show up for work when scheduled so they can run production as needed for the day.

Guy: It's just one time.

Me: Being a no-call, no-show on your second day of work tells the supervisor that you are not serious enough about the position to be a reliable member of the team. They're not going to waste their time training you if you're not going to waste your time making an effort to show up.

Guy: several seconds of silence before hanging up the phone

Me: to the disconnected call Have a good day!

Hope he got enough beauty rest that day so he could be extra sharp during his next interview. He's going to need it.
